My mother paid off her credit cards and then cut them up and threw them away. But she still gets blank checks from the bank and realizes now that the accounts are still open. She can't just call in and cancel them without having the card number which she doesn't have anymore.|||Have your mom order a free credit report:
The three nationwide consumer reporting companies have set up a central website, a toll-free telephone number, and a mailing address through which you can order your free annual report.
To order, visit annualcreditreport.com, call 1-877-322-8228, or complete the Annual Credit Report Request Form and mail it to: Annual Credit Report Request Service, P.O. Box 105281, Atlanta, GA 30348-5281. The form is on the back of this brochure; or you can print it from ftc.gov/credit. Do not contact the three nationwide consumer reporting companies individually. They are providing free annual credit reports only through annualcreditreport.com, 1-877-322-8228, and Annual Credit Report Request Service, P.O. Box 105281, Atlanta, GA 30348-5281.
On the credit report, it will have the open credit lines, and contract information for the banks. She can then call the banks, give them her account number (or social security number) and ask that the accounts be closed.
I hope that helps.|||Here is an easy answer for her.
Her credit report will show the accounts that are open with the last 4 digits showing. It will give her an 800 number next to the payment history.
Call the 800 number, tell them the last 4 digits of the account along with her social security number and they will close the account.
They know people forget to close accounts.
Go to annual credit report . com
And get a copy of the credit report totallly free.
If you hit the wrong address and they ask for a credit card number, you have the wrong site. Reports are free, always have been.
.|||You don't need the card numbers. The banks should have all that info. She just needs her name, social security numbers and that's it. Call them up and tell them that she cut up the cards. If you still need them, which I doubt you will, go find past statements and the numbers will be on there.|||The card number is usually the same as the acct. number so just look at the statement. It actually looks better on your credit if you don't close it though but with identity theft being so bad it might not be worth it to keep it open.|||She still needs to close the account. But, the account can't be closed while she still has a balance.
